Background Story
April Fools Day – 2011
Mommy and Daddy scheduled me an appointment with Dr. Moneme to have him check on my cold and red spots around my lower belly. Mommy was concerned that I was having some issues with my immune system and wanted to have it checked out since I was just in the ER on 2/9/11 for lower stomach issues. Doc examined me and then stated that Mommy and Daddy had to take me to get blood drawn asap as he was fearful that my platelet count was low. They did their best to tell me what exactly was going on, but all I knew was that they said ‘needle’ and I don’t do needles. The nurse who drew my blood made it hurt really bad, but it didn’t last long and she gave me a lot of stickers. A few hours later, after Daddy and I returned from lunch, Dr. Moneme called Mommy to inform her that I needed to get to Children’s Hospital in Columbus as soon as possible. At this point – Mommy and Daddy were both crying, but we left for Columbus. I slept the entire trip with Mommy beside me and Daddy driving (fast), still not sure what the big deal was, but I was along for the ride. Once we arrived to super big hospital, they checked us in and sent me to the back immediately. After several hours of more tests, xrays, and a lot of “friends” coming in to see me, Suzie (my friend who knows alot) came in to tell me what was making me sick. Dr. Suzie talked with Mommy and Daddy for while, but then talked to me and said that I have bad cells in my body that is called Leukemia, and that I was going to have to camp out with her for about 10 days so I could get better. Dr. Suzie told me that I was going to be ok as long as I stayed strong. Later that night, they had Daddy carry me upstairs to a bigger room with a bigger TV where I could camp for the next few days. Mommy and Daddy keep telling me that I am so strong and that we are getting ready to start a journey together… as a Team, and that our Team never loses. I believe them. We are going to win.

“I am the director of the Annual Fund at Tiffin University. Working in the field of education and as a former college student, I saw all the items out by the curb that could be of use to someone else,” Pinion said.

Pinion decided to start a business, CampusLeftovers.com.

“The Web site allows users to buy, sell and trade items for free,” Pinion said.

The site, set up similar to CraigsList.com, focuses on college students and faculty. Pinion started planning the business about two years ago and launched the site last fall.

“As the business grows and begins to turn a profit, I am going to start an endowment fund for college students in the name of my mom, Kay Pinion. She was a firm supporter of higher education,” he said of his mom, a successful, Bucyrus-based Mary Kay Cosmetics sales director, who died in 2005.

His Web site offers a variety of items for sale or trade including dining room tables, musical instruments, motorcycles, kitchen appliances and textbooks.

“The site is growing quickly as people learn about it,” he said.

Users can browse the site without logging in and can search by school or ZIP code. Those who want to make a purchase, Pinion said, must register.

Sellers can put pictures of their wares on the site. It is up to buyers and sellers to work out transaction details.

“I just provide the service,” Pinion said.

Pinion consulted the owner of NewFinds.com, Dave Morrow, who helped him get started.

“My sister, Tiniel Pinion, has been helping to promote the site. Dave Hudson and Brad Starkey helped with legal advice and Linda Adams helped with branding and the creation of the logo,” Pinion said.

Pinion set up Edconnex LLC, the Web site’s parent company, and has applied for a copyright for the site.

“My goal is to get as many institutions as possible to use the Web site. I’m trying to build up the clientele base,” he said.

From mattresses to microwaves and from televisions to textbooks, www.campusleftovers.com is offering shoppers the chance to bring new life to items no longer needed by their sellers.

Tyson Pinion, director of the annual fund at Tiffin University, has set up the Web site that allows users to buy, sell and trade items for free. He compared the Web site to a craigslist-type site that is geared toward education. Even though it has a focus on higher education, he said it could branch out and has flexibility.

Pinion said he launched the Web site as a separate venture from his TU position, although TU is supportive of the idea. He said his bosses are big into sustainability.

“I think (the site) could catch on and really benefit a lot of people,” he said.

Campusleftovers.com, according to information Pinion provided, “is a service that provides access and opportunity to students, employees, consumers and sellers of all items and services that may be related with, utilized for, needed, or sought after by those individuals and entities in conjunction with education.”

Pinion has worked in higher education and sees items dumped on the curb to be thrown away at the end of the school year. He said it didn’t make much sense to him, and he has been working on the Web site project for more than three years. He has been doing research and trying to find the right people to help with the site.

Pinion consulted the owner of newfinds.com, who helped him create the Web site. It went live at the end of August. His sister, Tiniel Pinion, has been helping him promote the site. He set up Edconnex LLC, the Web site’s parent company, and has applied for a copyright for the site.

Pinion said his goal is to get as many institutions as possible to use the Web site.

“Right now, I’m trying to build up the clientele base,” he said.

The site is free to everyone who uses it. Pinion said he is not sure yet how he will make money off the venture, but if it does make money, his goal is to create an endowment in his late mother’s name to provide scholarships.

The site could be used by incoming freshmen, students moving from a residence hall room to an apartment or students moving out of an apartment.

Users can browse the site without logging in and can search by school or ZIP code when trying to find items to purchase. Those who want to make a purchase, Pinion said, must create a username and come up with a password.

“(Sellers) can put pictures on there of their items,” he said.

It is up to the parties to work out an agreement about how to transfer ownership of items. They could meet face to face or arrange for shipment of the items.

Pinion’s Web site serves as the link between a buyer and a seller.
